The Art and Practice of Therapy

Change can only occur if a trusting and honest relationship is established. It is in this setting that my clients learn about themselves, develop new skills, learn effective strategies to cope, and then consider the changes needed to build a stronger connection with self and others.

My interest in Eastern thought, along with the practice of yoga, strongly influences my work. Both are an asset to my focus on being present with clients, looking at the here and now, and using the therapeutic relationship to foster growth.

Psychotherapy for Individuals and Couples

My practice framework is integrative and flexible, depending on what brings clients to therapy, the needs of each individual, and their specific goals. I borrow from several models of psychotherapy, including psychodynamic, Gestalt, humanistic, dialectical behavioral and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT).

Following my client's lead, I create a safe and supportive space, maintain a balance between careful listening and interaction, and remain mindful that the relationship between therapist and client is essential in establishing a trusting bond.

In my work with couples, an EFT model is applied. This model is based on Attachment Theory, which provides an understanding of how to help clients build stronger and more supportive relational bonds. More recently, my commitment to the treatment of couples has taken me on a path to expand my clinical training by incorporating the principles of The Gottman Method. I am working towards Certification and have completed Level 3 Training.

When I first went into sessions with Debra Rosenberg, I was a broken and depressed individual with low self esteem. Through her patience and encouragement, this has all reversed itself. Debra has always been there for me and has always gone out of her way to help. Today, I have been reversed from being that depressed person and have high self esteem. I have the highest respect for Debra Rosenberg and my hat goes off to her and her hard work. – D.B.

Approach

Individuals and couples who seek help often experience problems which are emotional, interpersonal, behavioral, physical and spiritual. Feelings of anxiety and depression, overwhelming stress, dissatisfaction and disappointment can interfere with daily life at home and at work. It is not uncommon for people to develop unhealthy habits and patterns to ward off negative feelings and thoughts. If ignored and left unattended, these problems can cause more pain and unhappiness for both the individual and for those who care about them.

When you become a client, I provide a careful and thorough evaluation, identifying areas that keep you feeling stuck and unfulfilled. Then together, we develop goals toward which your therapy/treatment is directed. Such goals may include: increasing awareness, identifying feelings and needs that have remained hidden from your awareness, recognizing repeated patterns of behavior, and understanding the impact that your difficulties have had on your daily life and those around you.

Change can only occur if a trusting and honest relationship is established. It is in this setting that my clients learn about themselves, develop new skills, learn effective strategies to cope, and then consider the changes needed to build stronger connection with self and others.

My partner and I began couples therapy with Deb about two months ago. We have been together for almost eight years, but definitely had some issues to work through if we were to make it a lifetime commitment that we both desired.

Deb is such a positive influence because she really takes the time to understand our backgrounds which can affect how we each approach a situation/issue. We both have been extremely comfortable talking with Deb. She takes a very fair and equal approach to her therapy, ensuring that we hear each other. Deb is extremely attentive to our "banter" in a way that makes us stop and realize what is happening at the moment. She has a subtle approach, but there have been many "Ah-ha" moments for both of us, which makes us appreciate that much more, Deb's approach. She enables us to see each other through our partner's eyes This approach has been extremely helpful to bridge our difficult times, without frustration or anger.

In a short period of time, Deb has gotten to the core of the issues we need to focus on and continues to aid us in an approach which is productive and positive for both of us." – K.B. and C.N.

For approximately 30 years, my clinical work has focused on individual, couples and group therapy. My private practice is located in Washington Crossing, PA.

Various practice settings have included in-patient psychiatric hospitals, out-patient mental health clinics, substance abuse treatment centers, and private group practices. I have a particular interest in providing bereavement counseling for those who have lost a loved pet.

A licensed clinical social worker for almost 30 years, my career began as a medical social worker. For many years, I held a faculty position at the University of Illinois Medical Center in Chicago. Every morning, I attended medical rounds with attending physicians, medical students and residents, informally teaching them about the psychosocial aspects of disease; in other words, what role did the patients' family, social environment, and cultural life play in each patient's illness and recovery process? My holistic approach to understanding each person added a broader perspective to the medical model of care. I provided the support and space for patients and families to adjust to the trauma of learning about their disease and its ramifications on their life style. In addition, I developed a social work position in the Emergency Department within the University Medical Center.

My work in the Emergency Room led to further interest within the mental health field. Some of my more notable accomplishments include:

  • Development and application of a program for victims of domestic and sexual violence, which included workshops for members of the Chicago Police Department;
  • Development and implementation of a psychoeducation program for families of patients suffering from depression;
  • And, as a member of geriatric assessment team, development of a program to identify high risk seniors.

My interest in Eastern thought, along with the practice of yoga and meditation, influences my work with clients. Both are assets to my focus on being present with clients, looking at the here and now, and using the therapeutic relationship to foster growth. An interest in conflict resolution brought me to volunteer at Graterford Correctional Institution with the Alternatives to Violence Project.
